We wanted to offer some groupings of rugs based on styles or techniques, but coming up with the categories proved more difficult than anticipated. For some people the descriptor “Primitive” applies to all rugs hooked with wider strips of wool, while others have a narrower definition of “primitive” that also covers style, detail, and even color choices.

We’ve created a new category that none of our artists selected for their works, (it wasn’t on the form they filled out!) We assigned the rugs below to this category because we feel is a more accurate description and that it gives you a view of a wide range of what’s possible with strips of wool strips sizes 6, 7, 8, and above.

Please visit our page featuring “Primitive” for more rugs accomplished with wider cuts.

We refer to our cuts with a single number, but it really refers to 32nds of an inch. So an “8” cut is really 8/32 or 1/4 inch. Narrow cuts are 2, 3, or 4/32nds of an inch – a “4” is 1/8″ wide.
